Sorry if I am preachy with this.
We have all been scolded by our mothers on not behaving properly, sometimes even compared to certain animals on not doing so. “Properly” here is what we consider human-like. It is the definition of what makes us different from other animals and plants. By default, humans have always put themselves at the top of every evolutionary list that they make.
So what really makes a human, a human?
Intelligence, yeah. And indeed human intelligence is something which has dwarfed the joint venture of lakhs of species of amazing earth-life! We are like the Australia XI vs. World XI of the 2000s, or even better. When you see the earth from space at night, it appears illuminated by the lights that we use in our rooms inside our concrete houses built on the lithosphere. That alone is sufficient to show the prowess of the human race. We rule. But do we care about getting a No-Objection from the ants and the termites before building those houses? C’mon, they are the ones whose land is acquired, and are displaced? Duh, lame.
Why we seem to have this arrogance is because our nearest rival, the ape hasn’t even discovered fire or the wheel independently. We will continue to undermine the ape community until they publish a research paper and put it online. And forget about other species before the apes astonish us.
It seems cool no doubt to be a part of the majority. On being a human. But there is a flipside.
I think sometimes our brains act too evolved for thriving on this planet. Sometimes we become so human, that we forget that we are animals also.
Here’s what we miss--
The basic survival instinct- Other animals have to fight for life every day. We take it for granted.
Living in the present- Not thinking of 50 years in the future, and relishing life one moment at a time. How many lions would have feared 2012? , and how many dolphins have a pension policy?
Trusting gut feelings- Why rationalize everytime and everything? There will always be a road not taken, an opportunity missed, a movie not seen. So sometimes think from the guts and not the brain and live with whatever future has in store.
Nature giveth, nature taketh away- However intelligent we might become, there will be no way of countering the nature in its bad form. The root of all devotion is fear, not respect. And we are devoted to what we call Gods, or the unfathomable forces of nature. Similarly, a dog becomes submissive to you if shown the stick. So remember there’s always a big brother, even if invisible.
